Last year Tartu City Council started discussions about launching a direct train connection between Tartu and Riga in cooperation with Enron (less likely overtaking former Edelaraudtee line), thus bringing citizens closer to Riga International Airport, as well as attracting more tourists to Tartu with such attractions as Ahhaa Center and Estonia National Museum.
If this project will launch, it will be unprecedented for Latvian railways, creating a first truly international regional train connection, since Riga – Mažeikiai and Riga – Bihosava lines were terminated in late 1990s. Also, if successful, other projects could follow – most likely to follow is extending Vilnius – Turmantas line to Daugavpils
